6 Things to Tell Your Client Before Their First Time Waxing

It’s your client’s first time waxing and they are excited, but of course, a bit nervous. That’s perfectly normal when people are going into a new situation, especially when it comes to professional waxing! Therefore, your goal is to not just remove their unwanted hair, but to answer their questions and put them at ease. When you have a client getting waxed for the first time, here are the six things you should tell them.

Different Tolerance Levels

Before their first time waxing, many people ask family and friends who’ve done it previously how it feels and what to expect. As an esthetician, you have to be able to deal with first-time clients who have heard all types of stories from friends, family members, or even the internet. The best way to ease these fears is to let them know that each client is unique and has different tolerance levels.

Explain that while there may be some discomfort from getting waxed for the first time, it most definitely should not be painful. That’s why it’s always a good idea to go over an individual’s skin sensitivity with a detailed questionnaire. Ask them how they normally tolerate pain on a scale from 1-10. It’s also a good idea to go over their health history and medication use before their first waxing appointment since these factors play a role in their tolerance level.

Grow the Hair Out

Regardless of where a client is getting waxed, tell them that size matters. Many people waxing for the first time make the mistake of not growing their hair out long enough. As an esthetician, stress that if the hair is too short, it’s hard for even the best salon wax to grip. Therefore, you won’t be able to remove it. No client wants to leave just as hairy as they were before!

As a rule of thumb, clients should grow their hair out to at least ¼ of an inch, about the size of a grain of rice. You’ll be able to effectively get the hair from the root one time without having to do multiple passes. For their first time waxing, inform clients to not grow their hair past ½ an inch. When hair is too long, either you or the client will have to trim it before waxing for the best results.

Exfoliate and Moisturize

When getting waxed for the first time, many clients don’t consider their actual skin since they are focused more on hair removal. As an esthetician, put it in the client’s head that exfoliating before waxing is key to improving the process. New clients should cleanse and exfoliate the area at least 12 hours before their appointment to remove built-up residue and debris that accumulates in the hair follicle.

Proper exfoliation allows the wax to adhere to the skin better to remove the hair quickly and more efficiently. This makes for a pleasant experience for everybody involved! In addition to exfoliation, clients should moisturize the skin after exfoliation for successful hair removal.

Properly hydrated skin gives clients a more positive experience for their first time waxing. When the skin is moisturized, its water content is higher which is better for wax to stick to. If the follicle is too dry due to a lack of hydration, it takes more effort to get the hair out. And, unfortunately, that can make waxing a lot more painful. Taking skincare seriously can make waxing more rewarding!

Different Types of Wax

If your client is getting waxed for the first time, there’s a good chance they don’t know about the different types of waxes and their advantages. Part of the process involves explaining the difference. First-timers might feel more comfortable with hard wax since it’s suitable for sensitive skin. Since it involves no muslin strip, explain to clients how it sticks to the hair and not the skin for less pain. Plus, it’s perfect for the face, bikini area, and underarms.

Soft wax involves the cloth strip, which can be a little intimidating for somebody who is experiencing their first time waxing. However, this wax has a big advantage for people who are more sensitive to heat since it melts at a lower temperature. It’s also great for clients with fragile capillaries.

As an esthetician, you want to provide clients with a neat, clean experience, and you can do that with a roll-on wax. It can make the process easier for your clients’ first time waxing since there aren’t additional tools involved like spatulas and cans. The fewer things they see, the more at ease they might feel!

Dress Comfortably

It might not seem that important, but letting clients know to dress comfortably for waxing can make a world of difference for them. Educating them on wearing loose-fitting clothes, especially after a Brazilian or bikini wax, can be a lifesaver! All the friction from tight clothing is not only uncomfortable after a client’s first time waxing, but it can also irritate the skin. In some cases, it could lead to an infection. A nice, loose, cotton article of clothing is breathable, allowing the skin to heal.

Post-Waxing Care

After getting waxed for the first time, many clients think they can just do their normal thing. Wrong! As a responsible waxer, let the client know that post-care waxing is essential. This can include using a post-depilatory gel or cream to use to soothe the skin. It also means letting clients know to avoid sun exposure, swimming, hot tubs, and saunas – anything that can irritate sensitive skin.

Clients who have had their first time waxing should also avoid strenuous exercise depending on where they were waxed. Additionally, Brazilian waxing clients should avoid intimacy for at least 24 hours. Your clients will thank you for that tidbit of info!
